Abstract: Drafting my response to this forum on Religion as Critique: Islamic Critical Thinking from Mecca to the Marketplace is different from the earlier one. The composition of partici- pants is different here. So are the issues and topics broached. I thank the Review Editor and the Editor for organizing this. Of course, I am thankful to the participants – Ian Almond, Humeira Iqtidar, Lulia Lumina, Salman Sayyid and Amanullah de Sondy – for their critical, rich reflections. Such reflections approximate, to use an Islamicate word, saughat (Arabic hadiya), which is vital to sustain as much as unleash the life of the mind.
